THE CHART LAB

Change the measure. Change the winner.

An interactive explanation of why hours watched and runtime-adjusted views can tell different stories.

TWO FICTIONAL SEASONS

Same time window. Different runtimes.

Change hours watched and total season runtime. All figures are invented, not Netflix or Nielsen results.

Season A · Long season
Season B · Short season
HOURS WATCHED / MILLIONS

Season A leads on hours watched.

A: 60 ÷ 10 = 6 million adjusted views. B: 40 ÷ 4 = 10 million.

What changes—and what does not

Views here = millions of hours watched ÷ runtime in hours. The bar lengths use the larger value as 100%; they are not market shares. Results do not count unique people or prove completion. This experiment isolates runtime: real comparisons also need the same country, period, source and program scope.

Input limits keep the experiment readable. Use decimal hours: four hours and thirty minutes is 4.5. Blank, zero-runtime and invalid values produce no ranking.
