On most major streaming services in the US, 4K, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos are locked to the most expensive plan. As of September 2026, you need Netflix Premium ($26.99), HBO Max Premium ($22.99), or the Prime Video Ultra add-on ($4.99 on top of Prime) to get 4K on those services, while Apple TV includes 4K and Dolby Vision in its single $14.99 plan. Even on the right plan, you only get the best picture on titles mastered in those formats and on a device, app, and connection that support them.
Prices are US dollars as of September 2026 and change often. Feature details are marked [VERIFY] where we could not confirm them against a service's official plan page on September 17, 2026.
The short version
- Cheapest 4K plan we found: Apple TV at $14.99, with 4K and Dolby Vision on its originals [VERIFY feature list].
- Biggest 2026 change: Prime Video moved 4K/UHD into Prime Video Ultra, a $4.99-a-month add-on that also removes most ads (CNBC; 9to5Google).
- Ad tiers: none of the major ad-supported plans we checked include 4K on Netflix or HBO Max.
- Sound: Dolby Atmos generally follows 4K; if a plan lacks 4K, assume it lacks Atmos unless the plan page says otherwise.

What each format actually does
4K (UHD)
Four times the pixels of 1080p. The difference is most visible on TVs 55 inches and larger and at normal couch distance. Streaming 4K is compressed, so bitrate matters as much as resolution.
HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision
High dynamic range widens brightness and color. HDR10 is the baseline format nearly every HDR TV supports. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ add scene-by-scene information so the TV can adjust as the picture changes. Your TV must support the specific format; many Samsung TVs, for example, do not support Dolby Vision [VERIFY for current models], so they fall back to HDR10 or HDR10+.
Dolby Atmos
Object-based surround sound that can place audio above you. You get the benefit with an Atmos soundbar, AV receiver, or headphones with spatial audio. On TV speakers alone, the improvement is modest.
Why you might not see 4K even on the right plan
- The title isn't mastered in 4K. Many older network shows and some licensed series are HD only. Look for the 4K, Dolby Vision, or Atmos badge on the title page.
- Your device or app doesn't support it. Streaming sticks, game consoles, and older smart TV apps vary. A 4K TV's built-in app may support Dolby Vision while a plugged-in stick does not, or the reverse.
- Your connection is too slow. Services generally recommend about 15 to 25 Mbps for steady 4K [VERIFY each service's figure on its help page]. Netflix, for example, publishes its recommended speeds in its help center.
- HDCP and cables. 4K HDR playback needs HDCP 2.2 through every HDMI link, including soundbars and receivers.
- Web browsers. Many services cap browser playback below 4K unless you use specific browsers or operating systems [VERIFY per service].
- Mobile and downloads. Phones and downloaded episodes usually play in HD, not 4K.
Device notes
| Device type | 4K | Dolby Vision | Dolby Atmos | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (hardware) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Broad app support [VERIFY per app] |
| Roku 4K models | Yes | Many models [VERIFY] | Passthrough to Atmos audio gear | Check the model spec sheet |
| Amazon Fire TV 4K models | Yes | Yes on most 4K models [VERIFY] | Yes | |
| Google TV Streamer / Chromecast with Google TV (4K) | Yes | Yes | Yes | [VERIFY current models] |
| PlayStation 5 / Xbox Series X | Yes | Xbox supports Dolby Vision in select apps; PS5 does not [VERIFY] | Varies by app | Apps vary most on consoles |
| Smart TV built-in apps | Yes | Depends on TV brand | Depends on TV and sound system |
"Apple TV" is confusingly both the streaming service and Apple's set-top box. The service works on many non-Apple devices; the box is one of several ways to watch.
Simultaneous streams and downloads, briefly
Top-tier plans typically raise the number of screens that can play at once, which matters for large households. Netflix Premium and HBO Max Premium have long allowed four streams, versus two on their lower plans [VERIFY both on current help pages]. Download limits are separate from streaming limits and usually apply per account or per device; an ad-supported plan may not allow downloads at all (HBO Max Basic with Ads and Peacock Premium have not included downloads [VERIFY]).
Which plan should you pick?
- You have a 4K HDR TV and watch a lot of Netflix originals: Netflix Premium is the only Netflix plan with 4K and Dolby Vision.
- You mostly watch HBO dramas on a good TV: HBO Max Premium; Standard caps at 1080p.
- You're a Prime member with a 4K TV: add Prime Video Ultra if you care about 4K on shows such as The Boys or Reacher; otherwise the base plan is fine on smaller screens.
- You want premium picture for the least money: Apple TV includes 4K without a higher tier.
- You watch on a phone or laptop: skip 4K tiers; you will rarely see the difference.
