By Nielsen's US measurement, Bluey was the most-watched streaming title of 2025, with 45.2 billion minutes viewed, and The Pitt was the top new original drama. On Netflix's own global numbers, Adolescence was the most-watched show of the first half of 2025 and Wednesday season 2 led the second half. Those rankings do not contradict each other: they measure different things, which this guide explains.

The short answer: 2025 leaders by source

Netflix engagement report, Jan–Jun 2025 Global views (hours ÷ runtime) on Netflix Adolescence 145M views
Netflix engagement report, Jul–Dec 2025 Global views on Netflix Wednesday season 2 124M views

Nielsen's 2025 picture (US, all platforms)

Nielsen is the closest thing to a neutral scorekeeper for US streaming because it measures many services with the same method. On February 3, 2026, Nielsen published its second annual ARTEY Awards, covering streaming viewing from December 30, 2024, through December 28, 2025 (Nielsen).

ARTEY category Winner Platform Detail
Top Overall Streaming Title Bluey Disney+ 45.2B minutes
Top Acquired Series Bluey Disney+ 45.2B minutes
Top New Original Drama Series The Pitt HBO Max 11.4B minutes
Top New Original Comedy Series Running Point Netflix [VERIFY minutes]
Top New Original Unscripted Sean Combs: The Reckoning Netflix "Nearly 5 billion minutes"
Most-Binged Title Gunsmoke Multiple services 241 episodes per viewer, of 404 available
Streaming Icon of the Year Seth MacFarlane Multiple services 60B+ minutes across his catalog

A few takeaways:

  • Library shows dominate full-year totals. A children's series with many short episodes, rewatched constantly, piles up minutes all year. Bluey was also Nielsen's top overall streaming title of 2024 [VERIFY 2024 figure against Nielsen's 2024 year-end release].
  • New originals are ranked separately for a reason. A new drama like The Pitt cannot compete on raw minutes with a decade of Grey's Anatomy episodes, so Nielsen's "new original" categories are the fairer comparison for the year's breakouts.
  • "Most-binged" is a different idea. Gunsmoke won by episodes watched per viewer, not total minutes.

Nielsen's full year-end top 10 lists (overall, originals, acquired, movies) should be checked directly on Nielsen's site before quoting additional ranks [VERIFY].

Netflix's 2025 picture (global, Netflix only)

Netflix publishes twice-yearly engagement reports covering nearly everything on the service, plus weekly Top 10 lists on Tudum.

January–June 2025

Netflix reported more than 95 billion hours watched in the first half of 2025. Adolescence was the most-watched show with 145M views, and the final season of Squid Game was the third most-watched program of the half with 72M views in just four days; across all three seasons, Squid Game drew 231M views in the half (Netflix).

July–December 2025

Netflix reported 96 billion hours watched in the second half (Netflix).

Rank (H2 2025 shows) Title Views
1 Wednesday season 2 124M
2 Stranger Things 5 94M
4 Squid Game season 3 79M

Netflix also highlighted UNTAMED season 1 (93M), Gabby's Dollhouse (108M across seasons), Peppa Pig (90M across seasons), Ms. Rachel (73M across both seasons), and The Beast in Me (43M). All five seasons of Stranger Things ranked among the half's 15 most-watched shows, with 275M combined views. The half's most-watched title overall was a film, KPop Demon Hunters, with 482M views (Netflix). Netflix did not state the rank for UNTAMED in the passage we reviewed, so we have not assigned it the number 3 spot [VERIFY in the full spreadsheet].

Netflix's all-time "Most Popular" lists

Netflix's Tudum site ranks titles by views in their first 91 days. As of September 17, 2026, the English-language TV list includes several 2025 releases (Netflix Tudum):

All-time rank Title Views (first 91 days)
1 Wednesday season 1 252.1M
2 Adolescence 142.6M
3 Stranger Things 4 140.7M
4 Stranger Things 5 133.8M
6 Wednesday season 2 119.3M

On the non-English TV list, Squid Game seasons 1, 2, and 3 hold the top three spots, with season 3 at 145.8M views (Netflix Tudum).

Why the numbers don't match: metrics explained

Nielsen streaming ratings Netflix engagement reports Netflix Top 10 / Most Popular
Unit Minutes viewed Views (hours ÷ runtime) Views
Geography US only Global Global
Devices TV sets only All devices All devices
Platforms Many services Netflix only Netflix only
Time window Week or full year Six months Week, or first 91 days

Minutes vs. views

Minutes reward length. A show with many seasons or long episodes collects more minutes than a short limited series watched by the same number of people. Netflix's "views" divide total hours by runtime, which roughly estimates how many full watches a title got and makes an eight-episode drama more comparable to a long series. That is why Adolescence ranks so high on Netflix while it would not top a minutes-based chart against library shows.

TV sets vs. all devices

Nielsen's streaming rankings count viewing "through television" in the US (Nielsen). Phones, tablets, and laptops are not included in those charts. Netflix counts viewing on every device worldwide.

Time windows

The same show can post different figures in different reports. Adolescence shows 145M views in Netflix's January–June 2025 report but 142.6M on the "first 91 days" list, because the windows are different lengths.

Measurement changes

Nielsen adopted its Big Data + Panel methodology, which was accredited by the Media Rating Council in January 2025, as its system of record in September 2025 (Wikipedia summary of Nielsen announcements) [VERIFY against Nielsen press release]. Year-over-year comparisons that span a methodology change should be treated with caution.

What's missing

  • Not every service releases detailed data. Figures for services that only publish selective press-release numbers are hard to compare.
  • Nielsen's weekly charts depend on titles meeting its tracking thresholds and platform coverage.
  • YouTube and free ad-supported services are measured differently from subscription originals in many public reports [VERIFY how Nielsen's year-end categories treat YouTube content].

How to use this data

  • Comparing across services in the US: use Nielsen.
  • Comparing Netflix titles globally: use Netflix's engagement reports and Top 10.
  • Judging a new show's breakout: look at "new original" categories or first-91-day windows, not full-year totals.

FAQ

What was the most-watched streaming show of 2025 in the US? Bluey on Disney+, with 45.2 billion minutes, according to Nielsen's ARTEY Awards.

What was Netflix's most-watched show of 2025? Netflix reports by half-year: Adolescence led January–June (145M views) and Wednesday season 2 led July–December (124M views).

What's the difference between Nielsen minutes and Netflix views? Nielsen counts total US minutes watched on TV sets across many services. Netflix views are global hours watched divided by the title's runtime, on Netflix only.

Why doesn't Stranger Things 5 top the 2025 lists? Its episodes were released late in 2025, which left less time to build views inside the year's reporting windows [VERIFY exact release dates on Netflix Tudum]. It still ranked second among Netflix shows for July–December 2025.

Are these numbers audited? Nielsen is an independent measurement company, and its Big Data + Panel methodology received Media Rating Council accreditation in January 2025. Netflix's figures are self-reported by the company.
