Subscription rotation means keeping only one or two streaming services at a time, binge-watching what you want, then canceling and switching to the next. Because every major US service is month-to-month and lets you rejoin anytime, most people can watch the same shows for a fraction of what it costs to hold every subscription year-round. The trick is timing your months around release schedules and knowing each service's cancellation rules.
Prices below are in US dollars as of September 2026 and change frequently. Confirm on each service's plan page before you subscribe.
Why rotation works
Most households do not watch every service every month. Big shows arrive in bursts: a season drops, you watch it, and the service sits idle until the next one. Paying for all of them continuously means paying for idle months.
A simple example: ad-free plans on Netflix ($19.99), HBO Max ($18.49), Peacock Premium Plus ($19.99), Paramount+ Premium ($13.99) and Apple TV ($14.99) add up to about $87 a month, or roughly $1,050 a year, at September 2026 prices. Holding two of them at a time (about $35–$40 a month) costs roughly $420–$480 a year, a savings of around $600, without skipping any show, just watching some later.
Step-by-step rotation plan
1. List what you actually want to watch
Write down the shows you care about and where they stream.
2. Map release dates
For each show, note whether it releases all at once (binge) or weekly. Weekly shows are the key timing problem: if a season runs 8–10 weeks, subscribing in week one wastes money.
Rule of thumb: subscribe when the finale airs, not when the premiere does. You will get the whole season in one billing month.
3. Build a 12-month calendar
Assign one or two services per month based on finales and binge drops. Example:
| Month | Subscribe | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Jan | Service A | Binge drop of a big returning series |
| Feb | Service B | Weekly drama finale mid-February |
| Mar | (none) | Catch up on free services like Tubi |
| Apr | Service C | Season finale plus library backlog |
4. Cancel right after you subscribe
On most services, canceling ends automatic renewal but keeps your access until the end of the paid period. Canceling on day one means you never forget and never pay for a second month by accident. Check the cancellation table below first.
5. Use free services in gap months
Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel and others are free and legal.
Current plan prices (as of September 2026)
| Service | Cheapest plan (with ads) | Ad-free plan(s) | Annual option | Last price change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Standard with ads $8.99/mo | Standard $19.99; Premium $26.99 | No | March 2026 (CBS News) |
| HBO Max | Basic with Ads $10.99/mo | Standard $18.49; Premium $22.99 | $109.99 / $184.99 / $229.99 per year | October 2025 (HBO Max Help) |
| Peacock | Select $8.99; Premium $12.99 | Premium Plus $19.99 | $89.99 / $129.99 / $199.99 per year | August 18, 2026 (Peacock Help) |
| Paramount+ | Essential $8.99/mo | Premium $13.99 | $89.99 / $139.99 per year | January 2026 (TechRadar) |
| Apple TV | No ad tier | $14.99/mo for new subscribers | $119 per year | August 2026 (9to5Mac) |
| Disney+ | Disney+ Basic [VERIFY price] | Disney+ Premium [VERIFY price] | [VERIFY] | October 2025 (Variety) |
| Hulu | Hulu (With Ads) [VERIFY price] | Hulu (No Ads) [VERIFY price] | [VERIFY] | October 2025 (Variety, above) |
| Prime Video | Included with Amazon Prime (ads by default) [VERIFY Prime and standalone prices] | Prime Video Ultra add-on +$4.99/mo | Via Prime annual membership | Spring 2026 (Amazon; CNBC) |
Two notes. First, existing subscribers often move to a new price later than new signups: Peacock says members who joined before August 18, 2026 see the new price on their first bill on or after September 17, 2026 (Peacock Help). Second, Paramount said it would scale back free trials and discounts in 2026 (TechRadar, above), so don't build a rotation around trials.
Cancellation rules: what happens when you cancel
On the major services, canceling stops the next renewal, and you usually keep watching until the end of the period you already paid for. Confirm before you rely on it, because rules differ for annual plans, bundles and third-party billing.
| Service | Where to cancel | Access after canceling | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Account page on the web or app | Until end of billing period; viewing activity and account details kept 24 months | Netflix Help Center |
| HBO Max | Subscription settings, or the company that bills you | Until end of billing period [VERIFY] | HBO Max Help |
| Peacock | Account > Plans & Payment, or the company that bills you | Until end of billing period [VERIFY] | Peacock Help |
| Paramount+ | Account page, or the company that bills you | Until end of billing period [VERIFY] | Paramount+ Help |
| Disney+ / Hulu | Account page (bundles cancel as a bundle) | Until end of billing period [VERIFY] | Disney+ Help |
| Apple TV | Apple Account subscriptions settings | Until end of billing period [VERIFY] | Apple Support [VERIFY URL] |
| Prime Video (Ultra, channels) | Amazon account "Memberships & Subscriptions" | [VERIFY] | Amazon Help [VERIFY page topic] |
Annual plan math: when it beats rotation
Annual price ÷ monthly price = months you must keep the service for the annual plan to break even.
Using the September 2026 prices above:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Break-even |
|---|---|---|---|
| HBO Max Basic with Ads | $10.99 | $109.99 | about 10 months |
| Peacock Premium | $12.99 | $129.99 | about 10 months |
| Paramount+ Essential | $8.99 | $89.99 | about 10 months |
| Paramount+ Premium | $13.99 | $139.99 | about 10 months |
| Apple TV | $14.99 | $119 | about 8 months |
Most annual plans only pay off if you would keep the service about 10 months a year. If you'd watch HBO Max for three months in a rotation, monthly billing costs about $33 instead of $110. Apple TV's annual plan is the exception worth considering: it breaks even at roughly eight months.
Annual plans make sense when:
- The service is a year-round "keeper" (kids' shows, a sports season you follow).
- You catch a discounted annual deal during a sale.
Annual plans generally aren't refunded partway through [VERIFY each service's refund terms], so treat them as a 12-month commitment.
Pitfalls to avoid
Losing a grandfathered price
Some services let existing subscribers keep an older, cheaper price or a plan that has been discontinued for new signups. If you cancel, you usually cannot get that price or plan back when you return. Netflix's ad-free Basic plan, for example, was closed to new and rejoining members before being phased out [VERIFY]. Before canceling, check whether your current plan is still offered.
Promo eligibility rules
Introductory deals are often for "new and eligible returning subscribers" only, and "returning" may require that your account has been inactive for a set period. Read the terms; do not create new accounts or use different emails to get repeated trials, which typically breaks the service's terms.
Bundles and third-party billing
If you pay through a bundle (such as the Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max bundle or the Apple TV and Peacock bundle, which costs $17.99 a month with Peacock Premium as of September 1, 2026, per Peacock Help), a phone carrier, a cable provider, or an app store like Apple or Google, you usually must cancel through that company, not the streaming service. Canceling one service in a bundle may cancel or reprice the whole bundle.
Losing watch history and profiles
Services generally keep your profiles and history for a while after you cancel. Netflix says it keeps viewing activity, ratings, recommendations and account details for 24 months after an account closes, so everything is there if you restart within two years (Netflix Help Center). Other services vary, so check before a long break.
Downloads disappear
Downloaded episodes stop playing once access ends.
Price increases while you are away
Rejoining after a price increase means paying the new price immediately, while people who stayed subscribed sometimes keep the old price a little longer. In 2026 alone, Paramount+, Netflix, Prime Video's ad-free option, Peacock and Apple TV all raised US prices (see sources).
Live sports and weekly news
Rotation works poorly for anything you watch weekly year-round, like live sports seasons. Treat those as "keep" services and rotate the rest.
A sample one-year rotation budget
| Approach | Services held | Approximate yearly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Keep everything | 5 ad-free services all year (Netflix Standard, HBO Max Standard, Peacock Premium Plus, Paramount+ Premium, Apple TV) | about $1,050 |
| Rotate two at a time | 2 of those ad-free services per month | about $420–$480 |
| Rotate one ad tier at a time | 1 ad-supported plan ($8.99–$12.99) per month plus free apps | about $110–$155 |
These are estimates based on September 2026 list prices before tax, not quotes.
FAQ
Is it cheaper to cancel and resubscribe to streaming services?
Yes, for most people. Keeping one or two services at a time and rotating based on release schedules costs far less than paying for every service all year.
Do you lose access immediately when you cancel a streaming subscription?
Usually not. On most major services, you keep access until the end of the billing period you already paid for. Check the service's help center to confirm.
When is the best time to subscribe for a weekly show?
After the season finale airs. That lets you watch the full season within one billing month.
Are annual streaming plans worth it?
Only if you would keep the service for most of the year. Divide the annual price by the monthly price; if you would subscribe for fewer months than that, pay monthly.
Will I lose my watch history if I cancel?
Usually not right away. Netflix keeps viewing activity and account details for 24 months after cancellation; other services keep profiles for varying periods.
Can I cancel a streaming service I pay for through Apple, Amazon or my phone carrier?
Yes, but you usually have to cancel through that company's subscription settings rather than the streaming service's website.
